Introduction
Avondale is a small, homely guesthouse where we aim to cater for the needs of all our guests. However, due to the build of this Edwardian house it is impossible to cater for the requirements of all mobilitys.
The following is a summary of our provision. If you have any specific questions please do call us and we will endeavour to help.
Pre-Arrival
Glossop railway station is five minutes walk away. Avondale is on an up hill gradient but a taxi rank is available outside the station for those unable to manage the walk. There is no bus service.
We have a comprehensive website where many of our rooms can be viewed. You can contact us by phone, snail mail or email.
Arrival & Car Parking
There is a slightly sloping block paved driveway capable of accommodating 4/5 cars in line. On arrival we will liase with guests to ensure that with a little consideration this is not a problem.
Entrances
Doors to both the house and cottage have ramps to enable easy access.
The door is always locked but two bells are placed at shoulder height.
Both bells need to be rung to call us from all parts of the house.
Breakfast and Sitting Rooms
The hall allows wheelchair access into the lower half of the breakfast room. A table to accommodate 4/5 is provided here for those with mobility problems and families.
The upper area, accessed by two steps has a further three tables for 2 guests at each. Another step is needed to reach the third of these tables in the conservatory area giving views of the garden and Pennines beyond.
A Sitting Room is available at hall level for our guests to use during their stay. A WC is also available at this level.
Flooring in the house is carpeted.
Bedrooms
The three bedrooms in the house are all at first floor level. There are five stairs to the turn and eleven to the bedroom landing. The width of the stairs is 28in. or 71cm. These would be difficult for people with very limited mobility.
All bedrooms are en-suite with WC. One has a shower room. One a bath with overhead shower attachment and one has bath, shower and bidet. Please ring for further information.
All rooms have tabletop refrigerators. TV video and DVD players have remote control.
There are two armchairs in each room.
Cottage Annexe Room
This is a large ground floor room with easy access from the block-paved driveway.
There is a ramp to the front door and internal hard flooring with mats. These can be removed if needed.
The en-suite comprises WC sink and large shower cubicle. A shower seat is available on request.
The width of the en-suite door is wider than average but some mobility would be needed to access the step in shower unit.
There is a double and a single bed with occasional chair bed to accommodate a family. An armchair is also provided.
Tabletop fridge, TV, Video and DVD players provided with remote.
Garden
A seat is provided outside the cottage annexe and also under cover in the porch to the side of the front door.
We have a large garden for our guests use.
Wooden garden furniture is available permanently and softer cushions can be provided in good weather.
The back garden however would not be accessible for those with mobility problems. There are steps down to the main garden and another step to a further lower level.
Guests must also be aware that we have a large pond with water feature. Extra care must be taken with small children and the surface round part of the pond may be slippery in wet weather.
Additional Information
We have always been a Non Smoking establishment.
For those guests with their own Laptops Internet wireless access is available in the house on request.
Guests from the cottage annexe need to come into the house to use the Internet.
Mobile phone reception is generally good.
Assistance and all well-behaved dogs are welcomed with their owners in the cottage annexe.
